One of the world''s major sources of copper is the ore chalcopyrite (CuFeS 2). The traditional method for recovering copper from copper concentrates which are comprised principally of chalcopyrite is by smelting. In the conventional smelting of copper sulfide concentrates, a copper-iron-sulfide matte is produced in a reverberatory-type furnace.
